1700 - 1600 BC, the Middle East

The Hyksos displaced the ruling aristocracy of Egypt and built a new capital, Avaris, for their new dynasty. Most of Egypt and all Canaan as far north as Ugarit and later Cyprus were under their dominion.

Assyria enjoyed a fleeting expansion, but was soon engulfed by the Babylonian Empire.

Babylonia weakened after Hammurabi's death. The kingdoms of the swampy south broke away from its control. The Kasserites remained a continuing threat.
