1600 - 1500 BC, the Holy Land

The Holy Land held many cities which flourished as Hyksos power centers such as Lachish and Hazor. Jerusalem itself was held by the Jebusites, a Hurrian group.

HBy mid-century native Egypt was attempting to re-assert its old claims to suzerainty over the Holy Land. It raided Hyksos territory as far as the Dead Sea and toward the century's end was powerful enough to mount an expedition which reached the Euphrates River.

Yet evry time the Egyptian armies withdrew, the Cannaanite cities reclaimed their independence. The Kingdom of Mitanni, alarmed at the aggressiveness of Egypt, actively encouraged the rebellions.
