1 BC, the Holy Land

Palestine seethed with frustration under the Herodian heel. Yet this was the prepared seedbed in which a greater faith could grow. The Jewish people concentrated in their tiny land had spent two thousand years developing their understanding of the One God. Their belief in his justice and ultimate triump had sustained them. They looked toward a Golden Age in the future and awaited a Messiah who would lead them.

He was already among them. Some time near our date of 4 BC, Jesus had been born in Bethlehem near the ancient City of David.
