Q: Are split rim wheels dangerous?

A: Anything used improperly can be dangerous. The split rim design was used, so that the tires could be changed in the field with simple hand tools. The danger is not with the dismount but with the remount when they are aired up again and the lock ring is not seated properly. Changing these big stiff tires is hard work. It is best to have a qualified truck tire shop do this.
